Folio

Things that do not exist yet, drawn to show how they would work.

Each folio is one idea I have carried around for years: a drawing that shows how it would work, notes in the margin, and an honest account of what stands in the way.

None of these are products. They are proposals, published so they can be argued with, borrowed, or proved wrong.

  1. Folio I

    The Sunlit Half

Half the world is always in daylight. A cable around the planet could share it with the other half.

    Ring ≈ 27,000 km · ±1,100 kV DC overland · ±525 kV under sea
  2. Folio II

    The Last Laundry Day

What if clothes were cleaned where they hang, and laundry stopped being a chore you carry around the house?

One garment per bay · 7 cm bay pitch · ≈ 4 L per wash, rinse reused
  3. Folio III

    The House Keeps Its Counsel

A home assistant that answers only to the household. Its mind is in a chip, and nothing said in the house has to leave it.

Model on a cartridge · No cloud, no account · Devices stopped by default
  4. Folio IV

    A Street That Keeps Watch

When one house is in trouble, the street should know in seconds. All it shares is the alarm.

    Alarm to 80 m in under 1 s · ≈ 44 m per hop · Shares alarms only
  5. Folio V

    A Shot at the Spark

Most of our worst bushfires start as one small flame in remote country that nobody reaches in time. This reaches it in minutes.

    10–20 km glide · Volley of 3–5 rounds · Foam in ≈ 8 minutes
  6. Folio VI

The Coat That Closes the Circuit

A jacket that does nothing until both of your arms are on an attacker, and then stops them. Making it work is the easy part. Making it safe is not.

Cuff contacts, gloves optional · Cross wrists to arm · Capped, staged pulse
